Calavera Regional Nature Preserve
San Diego County is home to more threatened and endangered species than
any other comparable land mass in the continental U.S. Our North County area is a
microcosm of this rich biodiversity. But as our population grows- so has the pressure
on natural resources and open space.
The Calavera area is the largest remaining, contiguous native habitat
in coastal North County. Its natural features include an extinct volcano, lake, the main
tributary of Aqua Hedionda creek, and coat live oak trees that are over 200 years old.
The Calavera area is centrally located in coastal North County. Bordered
by Carlsbad, Oceanside, and Vista - it provides recreational opportunities for thousands
of local residents for whom it is literally their back yard.
The Calavera area open space contributes to the quality of life and
property values in this part of North County.
We therefor support the creation of a regional nature preserve at
Calavera in order to:
- preserve and protect native habitat for plants and animals
- promote the use of this area by a responsible public
- support education and restoration programs
- minimize the adverse effects of development on this natural environment
