Calendar of Upcoming Hikes, Meetings and Events

Sept 11  Sat 8:30 - 10:30 AM Work session
10:30- 12 Noon- Hike/Celebration/Lunch
Buena Vista Creek Valley Work Session/Celebration This month's work session will include a special celebration of the end of our 2 year grant to restore the first 1.8 acres of the Buena Vista Creek Valley.  We would love to see all of the volunteers who have helped these last two years- and everyone else who cares about preserving this special area- come and join us.   We will start the morning with our regular work session- weeding, mulching and watering the restoration site.  At 10:30 we will do a short hike so you can see a bit more of the preserve .  Following that there will be a brief program and lunch to celebrate our progress and share our plans for this next year.  Please join us for any or all of these activities.  Dress for the occasion if you plan to work- sturdy boots/shoes,  hat and work gloves. Bring water and a hoe if you have one- but we will have extra supplies. The BVCER is located off Haymar (Plaza) west of College in Oceanside.  Take #78 to College exit, head south and take first right on Haymar Dr(Plaza) It's the frontage road along I-78, that goes to Mossy-Nissan. Sept 14 Tues 7 PM Social, 7:30 PM Program Hummingbirds- More Than Just Eye-Candy
"Singing" feathers, streamlined genomes, and continent spanning migrations are some of the latest mind boggling discoveries that rank hummingbirds among the world's most amazing birds.  Attend this special lecture by Sheri L. Williamson, Co-founder and Director of the Southeastern Arizona Bird Observatory.  Program sponsored by BVAS at the Buena vista Nature Center at 2202 S. Coast Highway, Oceanside (right on the edge of Buena Vista lagoon). 
Sept 15 Wed 7 PM Preserve Calavera Board meeting This is our regular bi-monthly Board meeting.  All members are welcome to join us but RSVP required and to get details on location.
Sept 25 Sat 9 am - 12 noon
Buena Vista Creek and Coastal Clean-up Day
Join Coastkeeper, I Love a Clean San Diego and City of Oceanside in this special 10th annual clean-up event.  We can't keep our coastal waters clean unless we clean-up the creeks leading to them.   Here's your chance to make a difference at this annual event that now includes Buena Vista Creek. Meet behind Kohl's Dept store- in the Quarry Creek Shopping Center near College and # 78.  Refreshments, supplies, community service credits and and special giveaways. Under 18 requires parental signature.  Wear sturdy shoes and bring work gloves. For more info contact 760-435-5536.


Hikes

  • Mt Calavera

    This is a moderate two hour hike to the summit of Mt Calavera. We meet in the parking lot of Oak Riparian Park. Oak Riparian Park is located off Lake Boulevard. Wear shoes with tread and bring water. Restrooms are available in the park. We will start in the riparian area, then see the famous Caltrans mitigation site, and then up to the summit. From the summit we can see where the next 870 homes will be built at Calavera Hills and the slopes that are now covered with coastal sage scrub that will be destroyed for the extensions of College Blvd and Cannon Road.   • Dawson-Los Monos Reserve

    This is a rare opportunity to hike into the Dawson-Los Monos Reserve. Hike will be led by the Reserve Manager, noted biologist Isabelle Kay. Meet in the parking lot of Buena Vista Park off of Shadowridge at Antigua Dr in Vista(by the duck pond). Learn about the reserve and how this special environment is being impacted by adjacent development. For more information call 724-3887.

  • Sierra Club

    Join us for the opportunity to hike the Calavera Highland Reserve with the Sierra Club. This area is officially closed to the public. Meet at Wisteria off Cannon Road in Oceanside.

  • Invasive Plant Removal - On going
    We organize invasive plant removal projects on an as-needed basis. Let us know if you would like to get involved in this kind of hands-on work.

  • Preserve Calavera Board Meetings
    The Board of Directors of Preserve Calavera meets on a bi-monthly schedule with additional meetings as necessary. All supporters are welcome to attend and get involved. Please RSVP to 724-3887 so we have a count and can give you directions/ gate code.
  • Tree watering - on-going
